The History of the Southwest Indian Basket Old Indian Baskets were made long before pottery was invented over 9,000 years ago. A variety of plant materials were woven by plaiting, twining, and coiling. Depending on how the antique basket was woven determined the use of the basket. Flat trays served food and were used for winnowing seeds and parching them with hot coals. Deep baskets covered with resin were used to carry water. Tightly woven baskets were used for cooking, using hot stones. Some baskets were used for storage or carrying.
