This Kachina doll is a true collectors' item! It is spectacular! We are willing to say that this is one of the best Kachina dolls available in the world! This is amazing!
The feathers, tree, rattle, and base are all one piece. The wooden shells are the only extra pieces. It took a sculptor on a par with Michelangelo to make this one. Hopi made, it comes from the Tuba City/ Grand Canyon area. It has been perfectly hand-painted by the artist with a combination of earth tones and bright colors. This Early Morning Singer Kachina Doll was made the traditional, old-fashioned way, hand-carved out of genuine cottonwood. This one features a wooden feather headdress that was hand-cut and intricately hand-etched with an incredible amount of fine line details. The case mask has a tubular mouth, and red ears. In addition, this Kachina doll features the traditional rain cloud symbol.
This Kachina Doll was purchased from the son of one of the oldest Kachina traders in the business; they handle some of the best Kachina Dolls on the market. And, with our business, we're hoping to do our part to help support the Kachina arts.
We are aware of your concerns in regards to the condition of your art work upon arrival. We have perfected our shipping, from years of experience in shipping this type of fine art, so we can assure you that your art work will arrive in excellent condition. In the worst case scenario, a small wooden feather might break off, but that is easily repaired. Although a picture tells a story, there is no way a photo or words can possibly describe the quality of this Kachina Doll.
“Hopi children believe in Kachinas just as our children believe in Santa Claus. In a Kachina ceremony, the children are not supposed to recognize their fathers, uncles, or parents' friends who are disguised by masks and elaborate costumes. As Santa Claus comes at a certain season bearing gifts to the children, so do certain Kachinas bring to the children Kachina dolls, miniature bows and arrows, sweets, fruits, and other food. Hopi children enjoy a whole series of Christmas delights during the period from late December to July." (Colton, Harold S. Hopi Kachina Dolls with a Key to their Identification, University of New Mexico Press, Albuquerque, 1959).
