The name "amethyst" comes from the Greek and means "not intoxicating." Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz and is a hugely popular semi-precious gemstone. Amethyst's coloration is due to ferric iron impurities reacting with the quartz in unique ways. Although amethyst is always purple, it can and does have a wide range of purple and violet shades. Because amethyst is widely available, the cost remains reasonable compared to other semi-precious stones.
